The vineyard at El Pla del Penedès
Situation: Alt Penedes.
Coordinates: 41o24 ‘ 50.70’N, 1o43′ 0.83’ E
Height: 215 – 225 meters
Soil structure: VENDRELL series. Very well drained, deep, medium texture. Calcisol Endopétrico.
Climatology: Mediterranean climate, Average annual temperature: Maximum 21.3, minimum 10.2, average 15.4. Average annual humidity: 64.79, Average annual hours of sunlight: 7.65 h. Rainfall 841 mm.
Soil conditions: Highly appropriate land for vineyards. Variety of fauna and insects. Compensation area.
Varieties: Macabeo, Macabeo Vell, Xarel lo, Xarel lo Vell, Pinot Noir and Malvasia de Sitges (new plantation).
Characteristics data: In the middle of Penedes. Highly drained, compensated land with great humidity which keeps the stocks strong, even if it is very hot.
In the middle of a depression and very close to the pre-coastal range. The vineyards are delimited to the north and south by two streams which provide the humidity required for optimum growth of the vine. Here we have 25 hectares of vines with well drained productive soil is and a moderate average temperature. This privileged location enables us to enhance the quality of each variety of grape planted.
In the vineyard call Les Julies we grow 66 years old Xarel.lo. This vineyard is highly pampered, with a head-pruning system. Our Blanc de Mayte wine comes from this vineyard, the first wine and our guide to excellence. Very close by we find the hundred-year-old Macabeo vineyard, the Viña Gran, planted just after the outbreak of phylloxera. We don´t really have an exact record, but our grandfather, Juan Fortuny Fàbregas, used to tell us that, as a child, he used to play in the vineyard. Now he would be 112 years old. This old vine gives us an exceptional grape, which is complex and fruity with a very special nose and great potential. We get our single-variety Macabeo from this vineyard and part of the Macabeo used for making cavas.
We also have the future of pink cava. A plot of Pinot Noir, fresh, aromatic, with a good tannic contribution and that in two or three years we hope that it has achieved the quality we ask for a good pink cava.
